2023 – 24 Programme

Mark Devereux Projects are proud to produce a new programme of artist talks, professional development workshops and group crits for artists. Taking place in Macclesfield between May 2023 – April 2024, sessions will focus on a wide variety of art forms, processes and approaches to building and sustaining a creative practice.

Following each session, participating artists will be encouraged to continue their conversations with one another about future collaborations and opportunities in the region. This will be unmediated and led by those attending.

Course programme

Harnessing your superpower | Wednesday 17 May 2023, 9:30-11am
Working as an artist can be a solitary venture. It is not always easy to recognise the core ideas you are communicating within your work when you are in the full throws of making in your studio. This workshop will support you to start dissecting your work and practice, giving new techniques and approaches to ensure your intentions are fully realised and harness your superpower – your artist voice. Led by Mark Devereux.

Introduction to Arts Council England funding | Wednesday 19 July 2023*, 9:30-11am
As one of the core funders for individual artists, Arts Council England grants can unlock and create important developmental opportunities to help you take your practice and ideas to the next level. This workshop will introduce the application processes for National Lottery Projects Grants and Developing Your Creative Practice – the two core funds for individual artists. Led by Mark Devereux.

Design for exhibitions & events | Wednesday 13 September 2023*, 9:30-11am
So you have a new body of work to exhibit or are collaborating with other artists and you want to put on a joint show. You may also want to communicate your work through posters, catalogues or books. There are many considerations when it comes to creating a strong and coherent visual identity for your creative projects. Artist and designer Mike Thorpe presents a masterclass where he shares ideas, skills and recommendations for communicating your work and practice to your target audience.

Throwing clay | Wednesday 8 November 2023, 9:30-11am
A masterclass workshop from artist Rachel Ho, demonstrating the skill of throwing and turning clay on the potter’s wheel.

Fabrication x Collaboration | Wednesday 20 March 2024, 9:30-11am
A special invitation to artist and fabricator Frank Albert’s studio, where he will give a tour of his workshop and discuss the merits of collaborating with other sectors to help lead to future commercial markets. Show me the money! | Wednesday 17 April 2024, 9:30-11am
Selling your work can be a core outlet for many artists and help fund future developments. This workshop will discuss pricing structures and various approaches to selling your work including: self-representation, art fairs, gallery representation and private commissions. The session will also consider the importance of negotiation within sales and offering collectors unique discounts or additional benefits. Led by Mark Devereux.

Finding the right opportunity | Wednesday 19 June 2024, 9:30-11am *
Identifying the right opportunity is not always as easy as it sounds. As your career develops, opportunities will change and you will have the chance to be more selective. This workshop will give tools to help dissect and understand the opportunity you are offered and how it does or doesn’t relate to your practice ambitions. The session will also look at platforms to find or create the right opportunity and how you can increase your success rate. Led by Mark Devereux.

Costs

Macc ‘n Chat is primarily focused towards artists living and working within Macclesfield and the surrounding borough. With thanks to funding from Cheshire East Council, we are able to offer residents of Cheshire East FREE places for all the sessions.

A limited number of tickets are available for each session to those living outside of the region (£25/session).
