“I took part in Critical Mass / / DRAW at a point when I was ready to undertake a deeper dive into the professional side of my practice. Mark provided a supportive space for the group to develop together, and guided us through the well planned course with empathy and knowledge. The sessions were lively, intense, funny and provoking and I’ve come away with a stronger sense of purpose and know-how, and really good group of fellow drawing artists.”

Nick Grellier’s practice combines drawing, assemblage, video performance and text works which examine tension and tenderness through semi-autobiographical scenarios and transitory experiences. Grellier’s works are often materially simple. Using discarded rubbish and found objects, and familiar drawing or DIY methods, her practice challenges value systems and hierarchical making, and pokes at the slim gap between seriousness and absurdity in daily life. Grellier’s use of text alongside and embedded in her work evidence her preoccupation with linguistic playfulness. In recent years she has made collaborative installations with artist Emily Lucas (both laughing) and artist filmmaker Anna Cady, using the context of place to investigate meaning and empathy.
